Maryland's Story is America's Story
In anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary, we’re opening the pages of some of our most iconic accomplishments, from the oyster farms of the Chesapeake Bay to the mountain peaks out west. Beyond the legends we all know well, we’ll explore stories of everyday Marylanders who served our country and helped democracy prosper through civic engagement. We’re honored to commemorate our deep and meaningful contribution to America’s past, present, and future by retracing Maryland’s illustrious history.
Place
Located on the grounds of the former plantation where Henson was enslaved, the site includes a Visitor Center with orientation film and gift shop, a historic house with attached log kitchen dating to 1850, and a 4-acre landscaped park. Visitors embark on a self-guided tour of interactive exhibits and artifacts across the property that tell the life story of Reverend Josiah Henson, slavery in Maryland, and the ongoing struggle for racial equality.
Story
Founded in 1641, St. Ignatius Church at Chapel Point is the oldest active parish in the nation. Founder Father Andrew White, S.J. built the original structure at the water’s edge and named the area Chapel Point.

Elizabeth “Liz” Bobo was the first woman in the state of Maryland to be elected to the office of County Executive, serving as Howard County Executive from 1986 to 1990.

In 1937, Harriet Brown sued the Calvert County Board of Education. She cited the pay discrepancy as a violation of the 14th amendment that granted equal legal and civil rights to all African Americans. Brown’s case was successfully settled.

Mabel Houze Hubbard was the first African American female attorney appointed to any bench in the state of Maryland.

On the morning of September 12, 1814, the British landed about seven thousand men near the site that later became Fort Howard, as a part of a campaign to capture Baltimore in coordination with their navy’s bombardment of Fort McHenry.

Piscataway Park was the first national park created to protect a historic vistas. Included within the park is the National Colonia Farm, a historic farm museum.
