A Small State with a Big History

The Maryland Mosaic is a collection of significant “firsts” from Maryland, highlighting the state’s significance and its contributions to the nation’s development.

Created by Burt Kummerow and Mary Blair in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the United States, this project offers a meaningful opportunity to explore Maryland’s role in shaping American history. Each Mosaic Piece reflects the accomplishments and conflicts that have influenced the state’s identity as a colony established in 1634, border state during the Civil War, and a leader in industry.

Some pieces represent national progress and innovation, while others reveal regional divisions and tensions that have challenged social cohesion. Together, they form a larger picture that illustrates the complexity and richness of Maryland’s past.

The completed Mosaic is offered as a resource for the people of Maryland, providing a space to reflect on the present and consider the future in light of the past during this significant national milestone.
