Looking to learn more about Maryland’s revolutionary past? Use the StoryMap to learn more about the events of the American Revolution in Maryland and key revolutionary sites across the state.
Maryland played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, balancing fierce protests, political innovation, and military sacrifice. From burning effigies in Annapolis to bold acts of defiance in port towns, Marylanders joined in rejecting Parliament’s attempts to tax the colonies. Yet not all were united. Patriot and Loyalist divisions ran deep, especially on the Eastern Shore, creating tension that sometimes erupted into violence. Despite these fractures, the Maryland colony produced some of the war’s most disciplined soldiers — both white and Black — whose steadfast service on distant battlefields earned Maryland recognition as the “Old Line State.”
